Oban Single Malt Scotch Whisky Little Bay Small Cask

This small cask single malt exhibits the same quality and authenticity that Oban's reputation is founded on.

In contrast to Oban's flagship 14 year single malt, the freedom of No Age Statement on this bottle has enabled the blend of a new, complex, balanced, and interesting spirit.

No need for flashy marketing around this bottle. The quality speaks for itself, and Scotch enthusiasts need no prompting to seek it out.

This offering from Oban is simply its original single malt that’s just left to age a little longer in small oak casks. This gives it an added level of rich, smooth, balanced sweetness with just the right amount of smoke, spice, and dryness.- Uproxx

Tasting Notes

Greets the nose with initial notes of citrus, brine, sea salt caramel and a hint of oak. The taste is tart with distinct flavors of cinnamon apple , butterscotch and brown sugar which make way for an elegant finish that leaves you with just a touch of smoke on the palate.

Production Notes

The production process for this excellent single malt is the same today as it was 200 years ago.

Barley is milled, mixed with water from the local loch in a mash tun, and stays in the whiskey wash backs for an unusually long amount of time, to create the traditional flavors. Yeast is added, and soon distillation commences.

Production volume could increase if the Oban Distillery team sped up the process, but this would mean losing the gentle character of the whisky. And that's not a compromise Oban is willing to make.

For the No Age Statement Little Bay, whiskies of different ages matured in three types of casks are used: first-fill European oak ex-sherry casks; re-fill casks with new oak cask ends; and re-fill American oak hogsheads. These whiskies were then married for a short time in smaller oak casks to allow for more contact with the wood and integration.

Oban Little Bay Whiskey is made in one of the smallest distilleries in all of Scotland, which actually predates the town that it is located in, of the same name. The distillery sits at sea level 208 steps from the sea.

The malted barley used comes from the Maltings at Burghead near Elgin in Speyside, the peat is all harvested in Scotland, and the water comes from the local loch, three miles from the town.

Drinkware Sip neat out of a Glencairn glass. We recommend this glass by our friends at KegWorks.
