Martell Cognac Blue Swift

$55.00

Martell, the 300-year old French producer of cognac plays with the element of surprise in its introduction of Martell Blue Swift, which is not a cognac. Old school goes new.  Bourbon drinkers, taken note: this is a spirit calling your name.

A relatively light body gives way to lush fruit, touched with oak. Currants and vanilla, figs and cocoa, hints of peppermint and gingerbread — they all come together into a surprisingly cohesive whole that showcases the best of both the brandy and bourbon worlds...It’s lovely in its own right, but I’m particularly hard-pressed to think of a better Cognac at this price point. Tasting Notes
On the first sip, the influence of American oak comes through with sweet notes of vanilla and a little smoke. As this fades, the fruitiness of the brandy comes through. This seems like a brandy designed to appeal to bourbon drinkers, and it combines aspects of both spirits to good effect. - Jacob Grier, author of Cocktails on Tap
Production Notes

Today, Martell celebrates its history as the first maison to bring cognac to the US with the innovative, complex, and richly flavored Blue Swift. This spirit is an inspiring and best-quality blend of the aromas and tastes of both the French and American distilling traditions.

In order to be designated a cognac, grapes grown in the Cognac region must be finished in French oak barrels. Martell departs from tradition with Blue Swift, a blend of cognac VSOPs finished in Kentucky bourbon casks. Through Martell’s signature copper-stilled distillation process, the eau-de-vie absorbs the rich aromatic tones of the bourbon cask, creating a distinctive, one-of-a-kind taste.

Terroir
Cognac grapes are grown in Charente, a region of France near the coast.  The mild ocean climate creates ideal growing conditions for the predominant grape varietal, Ugni Blanc. Divided into six locales, or crus, it is the blending and balance of grapes from different crus that makes for a hallmark cognac experience: rich, complex, and smooth, with notes of spice, flowers, and candied fruit.
