About Nahmias Mahia Fig Spirit

Discover this one-of-a-kind spirit with fascinating origins and a pure, delicious taste. Mahia Fig Spirit is an eau de vie distilled from figs. As the national spirit of Morocco, Mahia is emblematic of the country's rich cultural and culinary history. Morocco's Jewish population has distilled mahia for centuries.

Now from New York's Hudson River Valley, Nahmias et Fils Distillery crafts one of the only commercially available Mahias in the world. The spirit is based on a Nahmias heirloom family recipe, which dates to 1900.

Mahia Fig Spirit is truly the essence of fig (with a touch of anise seed.) Made in small-batches with care and attention, no sugars, colors, flavorings, or neutral spirits of any kind are added.

Tasting Notes

Aromatic fig and anise on the nose. Sweetness and heat interplay with flavors of stone fruits and a hint of licorice. Velvety body and texture. Dry finish with notes of cinnamon and pepper spice.

Suggested Serves

  • Traditionally sipped as a digestif, it also brings exceptional flavor to cocktails. Try 2 oz of Mahia paired with 1/4 oz of bourbon and 1/2 ounce of vermouth.  Prepare as you would an Old-Fashioned, with bitters and a sugar cube to savor that fig spirit!

  • Sip on a Mahia Mojito, or try the simple and sophisticated Fig's Elixir. It also makes a mean Margarita.

  • Try the Fig Pomegranate Sour, delicious as a holiday season cocktail, but really excellent any time of year

Production Notes

It takes more than five pounds of California figs to create a single 750ml bottle of Mahia Fig Spirit.  The spirit is distilled in a custom built copper column pot still.  Nothing is added during the production process except the fermented figs and herbs. The result is a tantalizing, pure, clean and naturally sweet (but not sweetened!) spirit.

Founder Facts

A software developer for 25 years, David Nahmias comes from a family of Mahia distillers. Their family recipe was considered the most exceptional in all of Morocco. After realizing there was no Mahia available anywhere in the US, he set out to introduce his family's delicious eau de vie with the world from Nahmias et Fils Distillery in New York's Hudson River Valley.

    Unique and Delicious

I was drawn to this unique spirit by the description on Curiada. I was not disappointed! It has a unique flavor that is definitely fig-forward. But there is much more going on here. It works really well neat or as a flavorful and noteworthy addition to cocktails. Will be buying this one again and again!

    A fig explosion

I've been infusing figs into gin for a couple of years so I could play around fig forward cocktails. My experiments have been successful, but when I saw a fig eau de vie I knew I had to try it. The aroma of figs is incredible when you remove the stopper. No fig infused gin or fig liqueur I've tried comes close. The flavors follow in hand. We've had a lot of fun swapping this in for gin or fig infused gin in some of our favorite cocktails. Really a cool bottle and absolutely a repeat purchase.

Worth the try! One of my new favorites

I just love this bottle! It’s hard to elaborate because I’m just so infatuated with it. If you like figs, even in the slightest, grab this to give it a try. Pair it with some amount of lime juice and seltzer = you’ve got a perfect refreshing spring/summer glass. You cab easily dress this up more if you want too. I just love this stuff!

An absolutely unique gem of a spirit

Wife and I have made 4 or 5 different cocktails with this stuff and that essence of pure figs just shines bright through. It absolutely loves playing with other flavors, particularly fruit juices. The cocktail written on the back of the bottle is an absolute banger. It can go in simple cocktails or complex ones, plays nice with other spirits (replace a half ounce of tequila in your margarita and hang on) and it always seems to be extremely present yet never overpowering.

It's a truly wild drink. Bone dry unsweet, but with a powerful essence of fig on the nose and taste. Not bitter, not like an amaro or aperitif, just FIGS. I don't really love it neat, but I think that's just because it's a hair pricey as a base spirit and I absolutely adore it in cocktails, I think I'm just tricking myself into saving it for those. It doesn't really have the complexity of a barrel aged spirit either, so neat is probably a waste. This stuff does make for an absolutely outrageous old fashioned with two barspoons of simple and four dashes of bitters (I split 2 of ango and 2 of ango orange)

A bottle of this is going in every single future order I make from curiada. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.
