A hand-crafted, single-sourced cachaça from a family-run distillery that keeps serving up winners. Aged up to two years in carvahlo (French oak, previously used to age white wine), expect signature notes of vanilla and butterscotch, a dry finish with a slight bitterness. All in all an exquisite sipping spirit.

Cachaça, for the uninitiated, is a Brazilian rum. Stylistically its more European, as its made not from molasses but from sugarcane juice, like those that were typically distilled on the French Caribbean islands. Though molasses rums are much more common, you won't regret catching a taste for the beauty of this unique, authentic spirit.

Mouthwatering vanilla, brown sugar, pineapple, plantain, and crème brulee winding into orange peel, subtle grass and vegetal notes, a lingering finish with notes of baking spice, chocolate, and cinnamon.

Production Notes

Avuá Cachaça is a single sourced and pot distilled artisan spirit. Travel four hours north of Rio de Janeiro, and you'll find Fazenda da Quinta, the farm where Avuá sugarcane is cultivated. During harvest season, this estate-grown sugarcane is hand cut and, within four hours, pressed by a water-wheel powered mill, followed by wild yeast fermentation for twenty-four hours. This culminates with a single distillation in an alembic pot still and on-site aging.

The Oak is aged for up to two years in casks made carvahlo, previously used to age white wine. Avuá takes great care to ensure the wood used for its aging is sourced sustainably. Through replanting and careful forest management, Avuá production works in harmony to support the flourishing and expansion of Brazil's most precious ecological resources.

Like wine, cachaça production is tied to the annual growing season.  This means each batch exhibits differences that reflect the yearly variance in climate, sugarcane growth, and harvest.  Batches are clearly numbered on the bottles to reflect the season in which the sugarcane was grown. Each season's batches are then a naturally limited run.

Terroir Avuá sugarcane is grown in a hilly area near the border of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. This area, traditionally used for sugarcane and then coffee production, was a part of trade networks along the Rio Paraiba to move gold and other commodities for transport back to Portugal.

Each cane field produces one type of cane and each field goes into one lot of Avuá, giving every lot a subtly distinct taste.
